Industry in Montgomery, AL

Government at the local, state, and federal levels play a major role in Montgomery's economy as well. It makes up 1/4 of the work force and lends a strong stability to the local economy. The local colleges and universities are also important, as are the major military forces of Maxwell Gunter Air Force Base.

Montgomery harbors many manufacturing facilities; one of these includes the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama. The plant is situated on 1,744 acres of land and includes stamping, welding, paint, vehicle assembly and engine shops. The plant also includes a 2 mile test track where every vehicle produced is driven for quality. There are tours that can be taken that are available as well.

Because of Montgomery's central location it makes it an important processing and shipping center for cotton, dairy, and other agricultural products, also including livestock.

Some of the other industries include metal fabrication, food processing, lumber processing, and furniture production. Sand, gravel, grain, and chemicals are also transported north and south via barge from the Montgomery region.
